The staff there coordinated with me during Christmas Eve so that the donations my family had to offer got into the hands of people in need before the Christmas holiday .
We will definitely contribute to this location as often as we can .

Thank You much.

I wish I could not give a star at all. I’ve heard extremely bad and disturbing things from the community ever since the last majors left. The Elgin Salvation Army would do so much for the community. Home Goods, food pantry, the Christmas angel tree as well as help those in the community who had lost their jobs and just needed a little help with making ends meet and paying bills. The Salvation Army has never turned their backs on those in need and now, people are being turned away because it has been said that there are no more funds which apparently is not true. I too have heard that funds are being taken for “personal use” and that the donations that are meant to buy food and essentials for the community, are being taken and not disbursed to the community. Also, many people that have made appointments and who have been told to come to the Salvation Army at a certain time to receive help, are suddenly turned away or being told oh, there is no more money to help you. I’m sorry, I thought this was a church! There have been complaints and cries for help but apparently helping the less fortunate is not a priority to those in charge here.I believe the Salvation Army can get back to doing what’s right but only if the community continues to speak up so these people can be held accountable!

This place is awful. They have ridiculous rules. They seem to be stealing the money or making money off what they have. Look at some other reviews. I have had issues with the Salvation Army in the past and refuse to donate to them after finding out they don't help everyone or every area but will take money from those areas.

The Salvation Army Elgin Corps does an outstanding job of supporting the local community. Their services are diverse, ranging from food assistance to spiritual support, and the staff is always welcoming and compassionate. The facility is clean and organized, making it easy for individuals to access the help they need. It's heartening to see the positive impact they have on so many lives. A true pillar of support in Elgin.

Unresponsive.
The last couple times I went for home goods, they were closed. There was a sign in the window saying they had no home goods those days. I have called twice and left messages, and I have emailed a couple times as well. NOBODY bothers to return my calls or emails. I think that's pretty ratty service and very poor Public Relations. I have also had problems with the girl who works there Tuesday mornings. I reported her once. Nice way to treat your community.

It wasn't always this way. What happened to you?

They are no longer a food pantry. I found this out the hard way, but I can only imagine how much harder it would have been for those without a car, or a phone, or internet to check, who had to pay for a bus ride there and maybe schedule a work shift around it in the hopes of getting groceries.
The last time I was there was a month ago. Everything was normal and there were no notices of this program stopping, ending or switching days or times.
When I went last Friday, the building was locked and the one person in the office would not answer the door.
There are still no posts on the door and my messages from last Friday are still unanswered and their website STILL states that the food pantry is available every Friday!
Even MORE frustrating is that no one at the Crisis Center, or other food pantry churches even knew about this. These places are handing out flyers for the Salvation Army food pantry to people in need who might not have internet or phone access outside of the library or the crisis center and the Salvation Army did not even have the courtesy to tell them the program no longer exists!
