Location and Accessibility

The motel’s location on Stony Island Avenue places it within a predominantly residential area of Chicago. This is a key factor for many visitors who appreciate a less tourist-heavy environment. It’s approximately 17 miles south of downtown Chicago, offering a quieter and more affordable alternative to staying in the city center.

Getting There

Driving is the most straightforward method of reaching the Stony Island Motel. From major highways, access is generally easy, though traffic in Chicago can be unpredictable. Public transportation options are limited in this specific area, making a personal vehicle or ride-sharing services the most convenient means of arrival. The closest CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) train station is a considerable walk, approximately 2.5 miles, and would require a transfer.

Motel Characteristics and Amenities

The Stony Island Motel is consistently described as a retro establishment, retaining much of its original 1950s and 60s design. Guests often comment on the unique, sometimes quirky, décor, which contributes to its distinctive character. Key features typically include:

  • Simple, Clean Rooms: Rooms are generally clean and functional, although they can be somewhat dated in terms of furnishings.
  • Basic Amenities: Expect standard amenities such as televisions, telephones, and private bathrooms. Wi-Fi is usually available, though the quality can vary.
  • Parking: Free parking is a significant draw for visitors driving to Chicago.
  • Outdoor Seating: Some guests have noted the presence of outdoor seating areas, providing a space for relaxation.

It's important to note that the motel doesn’t offer a wide range of services. There’s no on-site restaurant or bar, and amenities like room service are not available. Self-catering is often necessary, encouraging guests to explore the local eateries in the surrounding neighborhood.

Guest Feedback and Common Themes

The 320 reviews on Google My Business provide a valuable snapshot of the guest experience. Commonly cited positives include the motel's affordability, its unique atmosphere, and the friendly staff. However, recurring themes also highlight areas of concern:

  • Maintenance Issues: Several reviewers mention occasional maintenance problems, such as leaky faucets or malfunctioning appliances.
  • Noise: Due to its location on a busy street, noise levels can be a concern for some guests, particularly at night.
  • Dated Decor: While the vintage decor is appreciated by some, others find it to be outdated and worn.
  • Cleanliness: While generally clean, some reviews mention minor cleanliness issues.

Despite these concerns, the majority of guests report a satisfactory stay, often praising the motel’s value for money and its convenient location for exploring the south side of Chicago. The staff is frequently described as helpful and accommodating.

Recommended Information for Prospective Guests

Before booking a stay at the Stony Island Motel, it’s essential to consider the following:

  • Budget: The motel offers competitive rates, making it a budget-friendly option compared to hotels in the downtown area.
  • Expectations: Understand that this is a basic motel with limited amenities. Don't expect luxury or a pristine, modern environment.
  • Location: Research the surrounding neighborhood and its attractions. The south side of Chicago offers a diverse range of cultural experiences and local eateries.
  • Contact: Call the motel directly (7737318817) to inquire about specific room availability and any ongoing maintenance projects.

In conclusion, the Stony Island Motel presents a distinctive and affordable lodging option for travelers seeking an authentic Chicago experience. While it’s not without its drawbacks, the motel’s charm, location, and value make it a worthwhile consideration for those who appreciate a more independent and less polished style of accommodation.

I didn’t get any sleep because some woman in the room next to mine had different men in her room all night, she screamed all night and banged the headboard against the wall and you could hear the noise in my room. I told management and they had nothing to say…

I was coming into Chicago for a quick business trip and needed a room for the night. I'm not a picky person, as long as there's a bed and a lock on the door. Im not used to the cold so I parked my vehicle close by the office, mind you no cars were in the parking lot so I wasnt obstructing any vehicles from passing. The front desk attendant at first introduction was inexcusably rude! She refused to answer any of my questions demanding that I move my car because it was parked in the wrong spot. She was so rude to the point that I had to drive off without getting a room! If thats the first person customers are greeted with, then I understamd how the parking lot was empty. You couldn't pay me to stay there, just off of the customer service I was given.

The night clerk was nice, but the morning one was not. The room was huge and mostly clean, except brown spots on the wall. It had a real walk in closet, but no refrigerator or microwave and small tv. It was loud next door all night but that's nothing the management has control over.

& it was overly loud. Walls a paper thin.

My room was cool it didn't feel creepy, it was very clean and spacious for a motel, the hot water was on point. There were no strange people standing around. I didn't see any roaches or bed bugs. For its purpose it was great. Hourly and overnight rates are reasonable. Room 21. And yes I will go back.

Nice, quiet and comfortable. The price is right and you (I) don't feel like you (I'm) been watch from some hidden camera. Take your own music if you want to listen to music. Or you can sing to your partner? All and all 5 stars.

You all toilets are leaking. I told the worker on the evening shift. She got upset and bared me out of the hotel. GOD is good, but they will be hearing from my lawyer. I'll never spend my money here again.
