This place is AMAZING! From the architecture to the little statues and artifacts everywhere, this place is a treat for the senses. Lots of old wooden structures and stained glass make this a true gem to behold. As soon as we arrived, I felt welcome and at home. The host and hostess were very gracious and polite. I stayed for 3 nights with my wife, and we both agreed that we wouldn't even look anywhere else when we visit again.
The breakfast every morning was simply perfect. This place already holds a special place in our hearts, and we wish our wonderful hosts all the very best.
THANK YOU FOR SUCH A NICE TIME!!!

The most beautiful bed and breakfast in the whole state guaranteed. This place is to absolutely die for. Homemade fantastic food, every breakfast includes baked goods, protein and an egg dish. Also the warm peach topped with granola ... yummy!

Now that is our of the way, the hosts here are so terribly lovely I only stayed for a few days and felt like their family. They are so wonderful and helped me navigate a very tough time in my life. They made going through things a breeze. Just to name a few things they did for me took me back to the hotel I was staying at brought my bags back, let me check in early and late, gave me the BEST nickle tour (a house tour) I've ever received and IT WASN'T EVEN A NICKLE IT WAS FREE! They allowed me to leave things behind to ship back to California, I got extra bacon ( upon request the day before ). I got great conversation about coins, and life. If there's anyone traveling alone or with a loved one this is where home away from home really is. Please do yourself a favor and stay in a warm, comfortable loving environment. THESE PEOPLE ARE ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL AND DESERVE ALL OF DUBUQUES BUSINESS AND VISITORS.

COME WHERE YOU'RE ALWAYS FAMILY.

My mom turned 70 this past weekend and we had a lovely time staying at this bed & breakfast! Michelle and Dave were wonderful hosts. They also make a fantastic breakfast! Even though we arrived from Chicago somewhat late (around 10pm) Friday night, they were able to receive us and check us in.

It made me absolutely giddy that our room key was a fully functioning skeleton key!

There is some scaffolding on the outside of the house amidst restorations happening, but our room was still warm and quiet.

There’s tons of antique furniture, lamps and features throughout the house. Do yourself a favor and plan some extra time to tour the house!

we stayed here for 3 or 4 nights at the end of August of 2024. There are a lot of good things about this place.

It is really a very historic place and each room has a lot of fixtures that transport you back in time. The price is very reasonable. There are cookies and other things available and the breakfast is very good. No problem with noise and it was very clean - no issues there.

There are, however, two things you need to be aware of

(1) The place is undergoing renovations - and there is scaffolding around the structure that at first makes one wonder if it is secure. We didn't realize it and it was a bit of a shock. And here and there, there are some signs of water leakage. But, it didn't get in the way of the trip

(2) A more interesting thing was the welcome, which was - depending on your acquaintance with Iowa and its local customs - either a perfect representation of its people, or downright weird and even rude.

Our introduction started with someone I gather was the brother of the owner who, when we asked if this was the Richards house, made some wise-ass crack that apparently was supposed to be funny. It was not.

I then asked the proprietor if the structure was sound, trying to talk my wife into staying. His response: "you don't have to stay here if you don't want to."

There was one other comment by the guy outside that was just weird, off and, well, reminded me of some of my in-laws.

So, if understand the understated the quiet, rough humor of Iowans, it will not bother you. If you don't, just ignore them. They really don't know any better.

This property deserves a 10/10. Don't let the exterior fool you. It just made it even more for us. The owners were so kind and generous. The charm and comfort topped it off. We felt safe and very at home with the genuine hospitality and comforts. Breakfast was delicious and plentiful. They truly out did themselves by having a Bed n Breakfast like this one. Thank you so much.

As a native dbqer, i can safely say this place has everything you need plus more. You're not gonna find a better breakfast in town. You also won't find a better place to stay. Not only is the b&b exceptional because of the hosts, we also had amazing experiences with the other guests staying there. Such beautiful conversations that were very surprising & I'll cherish those moments forever. This place is quintessential dubuque in the absolute best way possible. I couldn't possibly recommend it more.

The historical architecture of this incredible building explains why I chose to stay there. The Richards is under continuous restoration and that made staying there even more fun. The owners have been doing the restoration since buying this unique structure in the 1980's. Much of the interior is beautifully intact and has an incredibly unique vibe which I loved. The owners live here as well and they enjoy telling you about history of this awesome structure. I'll be back to stay here again.
