Portillo’s Review: Amazing Chopped Salad, But the Cheese Dog Was a Miss

Portillo’s is usually one of my go-to spots, and they rarely let me down. This time, I ordered a chopped salad without noodles, extra cheese, and a cheese dog on the side. While the salad was absolutely amazing as always, the cheese dog was a disappointment.

Chopped Salad: Always a Winner

Portillo’s chopped salad is one of the best out there, and getting it without noodles with extra cheese made it even better. The ingredients are always fresh, the flavors come together perfectly, and the portion size is huge for the price—just $10 or $11, which is a fantastic deal. Every time I order this, it’s consistently delicious and satisfying.

Cheese Dog: A Letdown

Unfortunately, the cheese dog was not up to Portillo’s usual standard. The biggest issue? The cheese wasn’t melting at all, which is a clear sign that the hot dog wasn’t hot enough. In fact, it was kind of cold, which makes me think it sat in the warmer too long or wasn’t freshly prepared. I was expecting that classic, melty, gooey cheese experience, but instead, it just looked and tasted off. Definitely not what I was hoping for.

Overall Thoughts

Even though the chopped salad was incredible as always, the cheese dog was a letdown. Portillo’s is usually super reliable, so I’ll chalk this up to a rare mistake. I’ll definitely be back because their food is consistently great, but I might double-check my order next time to make sure everything is fresh and hot.

Love our DeKalb Portillos and the atmosphere that comes with it! Love bringing friends here. Not a bad thing on the menu.

Such a fantastic place to enjoy cake shakes, Chicago style hot dogs, Italian beef sandwiches, Cobb salads, and cheesy fries! Nostalgic atmosphere with framed wall photos from yesteryear and present. Fast, friendly, delicious service - plus they make their own catered, delicious, huge chocolate cakes! I WILL be back!

We usually dine in for lunch but did carry out for dinner tonight. We did the full slab rib dinner + chocolate cake. Salad was great, ribs were excellent, chocolate cake top notch. Minus one star for missing French fries. Also, with a full slab, probably need a little more bread than the small heel. I say good value and good quality.

Portillo's hot dogs are good. It's just a hot dog with more different toppings. but their Burgers ..the size is different. a single size is huge. I can't imagine the double size. This location is always clean. Employees are polite. friendly. (patience with me when I order ) I love seeing old pictures hanging on the wall. Stop by and get a hot dog or burger ..your gonna enjoyed the food and atmosphere.
