My wife and I live just outside St Louis. We go to the Shawnee National Forest area for our anniversary every January. We have never stayed at the same place twice. That will now end as it's going to be Makanda Inn every time. We've never had a single issue with other lodging in the area - it's just THAT GREAT at Makanda Inn. The property is absolutely spotless - inside and out. Not even a smudge on the window or a single piece of litter on the grounds. The innkeepers are AMAZING! Friendly and helpful while still managing to give you space to connect. The breakfasts were fantastic! We didn't know what to expect, but we were not let down in the slightest. Communication was excellent. We wanted to book massages in room, but we didn't do it at the time of reservation due to indecisiveness on our own parts. Not a problem. Despite only 5 days notice, the innkeepers were able to book us the massages.
We will now book Makanda Inn every year without a second thought. We were extremely impressed with the entire operation!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Makanda Inn. It is an amazing bed and breakfast. Breakfast in the morning was delicious. Great hosts. Loved the nearby wineries and hiking. I would definitely recommend staying at the Makanda Inn. Our suite was comfy and clean.

Our visit to Makanda Inn was a birthday surprise for my Partner. The Black Walnut room was outstanding with all the light coming through the windows and sliding door, which looked out to the woods.
The beautiful bedroom with the wall of Black Walnut for the headboard was gorgeous! The bed linens were of a very nice quality, and lots of pillows!
The glass shower has a rainfall shower head with plenty of room for 2 to fit comfortably.
Our breakfasts at 9am daily, were homemade by our Hosts. Delicious and hearty to start our day.
A lovely spot to stay amongst the woods!

We stayed in the Sugar Maple Suite. Our room was very clean and quite comfy, especially the bed. Breakfast served downstairs the next morning was really good and the atmosphere very relaxing. Beautiful wooded area with opportunity to visit close by Giant City State Park. We ate at the state park lodge and enjoyed seeing lodge along ordering a good meal. Some suites have a balcony facing the woods; our suite's porch was along the driveway, but was still pretty and relaxing to sit on.

Very, very disappointing! Careful! We booked the cabin, arrived and learn that we can get in the house , because in the mean time price change and we can get only 2 rooms at the main building if we want. Well, going there was to get a cabin in the woods. Had to argue for hours to get refund back and face destroying vacation mood.

We spent a long weekend at the Inn when the family had to return to Carbondale for a funeral. Despite that, we had a lovely time at the Inn which is in a beautiful setting, stylishly appointed, immaculately clean, and an all around wonderful place to stay. We rented two of the cabins and one room in the main building. The hosts were very friendly and accommodating, the breakfasts plentiful and tasty, and the prices are so reasonable. If you find yourself in this part of the country don’t hesitate to stay at the Makanda Inn. You won’t be sorry.
