👍 Reviews of Lassen Volcanic National Park

I was there in first week of April. Only south entrance was open. A lot of snow, the road is cleaned till visitor center. From there you can have a walk till Sulfur works via covered in snow road. That's 45 minutes walk there and a bit faster back cause way back is downhill. Sulfur works is nice to see, very intensive boiling pool and several steam jets nearby.

We visited in April 2025

The highway through the park wasn’t open yet so only areas by the visitor center / entrances were open unless you’re looking to hike along the highway for multiple miles and pothole through deeper snow.

We did the hikes around Reflection Lake and Manzanita Lakes which were easy, straightforward (no elevation change), and had good views. We hiked along the Chaos Crags trail but the trial turned to only snow around a mile and a half in.

If you’re looking for more to do, Redding is a pretty neat town and the Subway Caves in the Lassen National forest is pretty cool.

Really cool park, reminds me of a miniature Yellowstone. Lots of waterfalls, lakes, mountains and geothermal features just like Yellowstone. The only thing that was missing was all of the wildlife. Highly recommend!

Beautiful place. Lots of snow still on the ground and the road through the park isn’t fully open yet so you have to drive around to get to both sides.

Visiting Lassen in May and while it is beautiful few things you should know. The Southern entrance is in Mineral and the only visitor center open year round. We ended up on the Northern side staying in Shingletown. If in Summer you would be fine but its snowing here now on May 12, 2025. II'm an avid National Park lover so of course I wanted my cancellation stamp 😅. So we drove from Shingletown to Mineral. It's a pretty rough drive lots of bumps and hairpin turns. We got almost to Mineral when the snow started pouring down. I'm not familiar with the area and although we had a 4-wheel drive I was not comfortable continuing in the conditions. Bummed I wouldn't get in the park, do a hike and stamp my book we turned around. In a last ditch effort we went to the Northern entrance about 19 miles from Shingletown. Knowing the loomis museum was closed we wanted to at least see the park. To our surprise there is a store outside of the visitor center. We explored a bit and got our stamp! The loomis museum should open the weekend before memorial day for those traveling before.

Best times to visit this remote park might be June through September. The road through the park is closed in spots during late fall-mid spring. If you can only travel those times I would stay on the Southern end near Mineral. Otherwise Shingletown is pretty limited but very cute. There's a dollar general, a gas station, a pizza place and a gas station. Redding is a great spot to grab groceries on your way in. Keep in mind Loomis museum may be closed but there is a gift shop that is open til 4 to get your stamp!

Safe travels and a beautiful park or what we got to see of it.

This park was very cool! I was here in October and there were hardly any people. I had my kitty with me so I stuck to the main road and did all the stops plus the Bumpass Hell hike. This was a great way to spend the day.

It was beautiful in 11 feet of snow! I could not enjoy the hiking trails because I was not prepared but I saw plenty of people who could because they brought their cross country skis and snowshoes!

This is a very nice national park but not one of my favorites so far. When we visited in mid-June most of the road was still covered in snow, but the parts we did see were extremely pretty! I don't think you need to spend more than a day or two here to see everything and do a few hikes.
