Hovey's Diner - Olney, Illinois

My husband and I were passing through here on the way home from the eclipse, looking for lunch. I always look for diners in small towns, because I believe more often than not they will serve good, home cooked comfort food. Which is just what you need before a long ride home. Hovey's perfectly fit that description and did not disappoint.

There was plenty of room in the restaurant, but we opted to sit at the window so we could take in the sight of the main street. There was a fairly steady influx of people coming in for lunch, so service was a little slow but nothing outrageous. My husband ordered the Country Fried Steak which came with two large pieces, accompanied by small bowls of mashed potatoes, coleslaw and gravy. Everything was very good, especially the coleslaw. My husband is a self-proclaimed coleslaw connoisseur, and he thought Hovey's was the best he's had in a while. He's also not a big fan of gravy, but thought theirs was a great compliment to the steak, being rich and creamy and not overly seasoned. I decided to try the breaded Five Alarm Chicken sandwich, and thought that was delicious. The chicken was crispy and flavorful, and the pepper jack cheese, hot sauce and jalapenos were the perfect way to round it all out. Overall a savory sandwich with a nice kick.

If you stop in for a bite, head next door after your meal to visit Chilly Willy's. Both places are a nice way to spend your stop in Olney.

I've been there several times. Hit and miss on food and service. Breakfast not th best suggestion. ordered eggs over easy once and they were overly easy with clear juice running out and cold and recently bacon wasn't completely cooked and and clumped together. Not good experience!

Heard great things about this place, so while in town, I decided to pop in and give it a try. I must admit I did have a bit of difficulty trying to figure out where to park. There is limited space along the road in front of the diner, but a space opened up, which was fortunate for me that I had my friend with me who was handicapped so we used the handicapped space to park. I did ask the gentleman who waited on us where people usually park, and he said the lot directly across the street was used for their establishment on a regular basis. So that problem was solved to my satisfaction. I do plan on returning to eat here again, so I needed to know.
Now, to move on to the inside of the diner, finally. This is a relatively small diner, but there are still plenty of tables available for seating. The waiter was very nice and took our drink order and gave us a menu for us to decide what we would like to eat. The prices are about the same as most diners but not too expensive or detailed for a quick meal. The food was very good and the service was stellar. I was in a bit of a hurry and asked if it would be a very long wait, and they assured me I would get me food quickly. I did, and it was pretty good, I must say. My friend and I tried their cheeseburgers, and they were great. I do plan on returning when back in town to eat here again and maybe try a different sandwich. I would recommend that if you do plan on eating here that you park across the street. I found the place on a Google search and kind of wish that info was on the page. I am looking forward to returning sometime in the near future, and if you are in the mood for a diner-style meal, this place will not disappoint.

This little place serves up some amazing home cooked meals. Beef manhattan, green beans and warm peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream.

Just had breakfast. Hashbrowns were burnt, the pancake had been cooked with too much oil. The western omelet was the highlight. Service was good. Very disappointed.

Found this cute dinner while traveling. Got the Big Joe. Burger with grilled onion, fried egg and bacon. Ordered with curly fries and a coke. Perfect diner food.
