Hotel Lumberjack - Sonora, California

We were very excited to stay here based on recommendations. We were quickly disappointed upon entering our room. It was quite small with almost no walking room around the bed. Our dog spilled his water and I went to wipe it up and the floor was filthy as you can see below. This is a white towel too. It made me question the cleanliness of the whole room. Later that night I went to take a shower and saw the soap holder was covered in soap residue. The hotel has dispensed soap, shampoo, and conditioner so this also was alarming. There weren’t even 2 full sets of towels and they were very thin and small.
Later that night the people next to us kicked our door, and when we called the front desk they said they were going to come talk to them and didn’t but then when I called back she said she was going to call them and didn’t. It was quite upsetting and my husband stayed up all night in case they tried something else. Upon check out we spoke to the manager who apologized, didn’t seem surprised about the cleanliness and only offered us a 15% discount and if we were to try them again would upgrade us to a suite.
We never got a bill detail emailed to us like they said and still have not seen a discount.

The hotel was very easy to find, a little trouble finding the check-in office. I did not realize the reservation desk was in the Sonora Inn. The clerk was very helpful and friendly. Our room was clean and comfortable, and seemed to be recently updated. The parking lot was pretty full when we arrived back to the hotel. but was well lit for a nighttime arrival. The continental breakfast as kept full with fresh food, and the room was clean and bright. I would recommend this hotel to everyone.

Rooms are on the smaller side (it's a motel) but newer, nice, and clean. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Location was perfect with multiple places to eat and drink within short (couple mins at most) walking distance.

Only 2 pillows per bed with no spare in closet
Only 2 towels despite reservation for 4 (2 A 2 K)
Questionable how clean the bedding is
Parking lot is cramp and across the street from check-in
No exhaust in the bathroom
Window sills are dirty
Recently renovated but a lot is already detoriating

I could probably go on... But you get the picture from there.

The price isn't bad. If you need a place to sleep, it's not the worst place I've stayed at. But that's a backhanded compliment at best.

I really want to say this is a great place to stay. And, I'm sure in time it will be. The rooms are esthetically pleasing. They're quite cute. But, there was garbage and chips on the floor in our room when we walked in. Lucky for us, there was a broom left outside our door. We cleaned the floor ourselves since it was obviously not done by housekeeping. The internet never worked and we were there for 3 days. The toilet paper, tissues and towels are right on theme, they're as rough as a Lumberjacks beard. The continental breakfast was pretty sad and so was the room it's in. There was no flow to the food so you were having to walk past people eating multiple times just to get your food and drinks ready. The garbage is always about to overflow. There's a tarp over a windowed door that's held up by painters tape. The seats are all stained. I'm sure in time all these little things (that add up to be highly irritating) will be worked out. But possibly the most annoying thing was that every night when we returned to our room, the key card never worked. We had to go across the street to the lobby each time and get new cards. The shining star in all of this, was Christine, the evening desk clerk. We were truly grateful for her.

Update 12/6/24: they lied and we never got the refund.

Original: Lumberjack hotel is a mixed bag. We checked in, the TV in our room didn't work. They couldn't move us to another room because it was booked. The night desk lady said maintenance could fix it in the morning. We went to breakfast in the morning and the lady there said maintenance and the manager quit so the TV couldn't be fixed. The morning lady offered a partial refund but said it would take awhile because we booked through Expedia. (Still haven't received the refund). Later, the hotel called and accused us of having a dog in our room. We don't have pets. That was actually pretty funny. No one apologized for that.

The wifi doesn't work. I had to work out of where they serve breakfast in the morning. If you are working online, do not stay here. Book at their sister hotel Sonora inn so you can work from your room. My laptop wouldn't stay connected to the Sonora inn Wi-Fi from our room due to distance and the lumberjack wifi doesn't work. As a traveling professional, that really sucked

Basically, the hotel looks like they spend more time caring about whether or everything is cutesy with lumberjack hotel monogrammed on everything and not enough time actually caring about their clients or their experience. If you are looking for a place to crash one night, it isn't bad. More than one night is a nightmare.

3 stars because my husband thinks it's no big deal. If it was just me it would be 1. Honestly the location is nice though in Sonora.

We only stayed a night, but it was everything we needed. The desk person, she was super nice, fun and welcoming. The location was also top notch, being so close to the main street allowed us to walk to grab dinner as well. The room was clean and comfortable, and the fact that we could travel with our pups and get a nice room is always a big plus. Would totally recommend if you are looking for a place to stay for a couple of days.

Overall experience on this place is terrible. The customer service seems like they don't like anyone who comes in to stay with them. The rooms were "updated" but are small, sad, and the AC doesn't work without a motion trigger. Have your AC and expect to come back into a cold room? Good luck! While looking for things to do in the area, the only thing seemed to be meth, so not so stay friendly. Now I'm getting spam emails from them that I did not sign up for or agree to.
