The only good thing this hotel has is its location. Anything else, if I could offer negative stars. I would. To begin, there was a 250 deposit at check in. In all my experiences in traveling I've never paid a 250 deposit. The rooms are small and cramp. If you have any claustrophobia this definitely wouldn't be the hotel for you. The picture make the hotel seem nice and elegant. That is definitely not the case. The hotel is very dated with stains on their carpet. The people that work there are very hostile and racist. I was racially profiled coming into the hotel. The guy in the lobby asked did I have a room here. I told him I did and showed him my key card and proceeded to the elevator. The man came running to the elevator, placed his hand in the elevator to keep it open. He asked me what is my name and my room number. I told him that's none of his business and why is he harassing me. When I told him that he got upset and told me that I would need to check out even though I paid for 2 nights. I waited in the guest lobby just to see their procedure. I witnessed 5 to 6 people enter and wasn't questioned about their stay. Guess they only question people with melanin in their skin.

This place is OLD SKOOOL back in the day hotel. So it's like historical feel. The prices are Low because of this. No breakfast But plenty of places to walk to and try around the area. Public transportation VERY accessible. I gave 3 stars for room because it could use some refreshing... like it looks like my grandma's old guest room that hasn't been updated for at least 20 years.

There is no air conditioning but they provided a box fan. For me I was fine, even when it was 90 outside over the weekend.

I wouldn't pay more than I did for the room, I feel like for San Francisco I actually paid for a place to sleep where I felt safe and comfortable , that was provided.

Very poor experience. Will not recommend. The room was nothing like the picture advertised. I booked for a single bed room and was taken to a room with 2 small beds. The carpet was old and dusty.

A friend came visiting and was asked to leave in a very hostile manner because apparently they have a policy of no visitors which is not included in their booking policies. Never heard of a hotel that doesn't allow visitors and if i was made aware of this before booking, id have checked somewhere else.
I have read reviews of profiling and I suspect this was a related incident

I had a wonderful stay at Hotel Amari this week. The staff are very helpful and kind, the room is nice as well as the bathroom. The cleaning lady is very good, trustworthy and comes every day. I left my designer clothes and jewelry there and everything was fine. Only 1 improvement needed: it was cold in the room. Please get some solution for that.

We really enjoyed our father son trip to Frisco. Front desk was very nice. We normally use the do not disturb placard because we dont want to ask for anything if only 2-3 night stay. Housekeeping still asked if we needed anything when we came back from exploring. Very good customer service. The hotel is vintage, beds were clean, and we loved the shower and the hot water. Honestly one of the best showers we have experienced traveling the USA at high end places and even VRBO. That good! Room had a really neat feel to it. We absolutely loved staying here!!!! I loved opening the window on our room 7th floor and seeing the fire escape. That was just cool, things are different now with chain hotels. We will come again soon and stay here. Incredible value for 3 night weekend stay for 400$
Wow! Thanks all.

It was my first trip to San Francisco, and I was recommended to this hotel by Booking.com as a replacement because the original hotel that I booked through Booking.com was unable to keep my reservation. I should have just taken the refund from Booking.com, but they paid the difference in price from the original hotel that I booked and Hotel Amari. The original hotel that I booked had 4 star reviews on Google, and somehow Hotel Amari had better reviews and was more expensive than the original hotel that I had booked, so I thought that I was getting a deal with Booking.com paying the difference. WRONG!!!
I should have known that from the first time when I entered the lobby, and it smelled of something dead that I should have left. The smell in the lobby and hallways was akin to a morgue. Had it not been after 1am, I would have left, but I had no other place to go, and my taxi had already left, so I was stuck at least for the rest of the night. From the lobby, I took the rickety old elevator to the 3rd floor to my room, gaging half of the way due to the smell. When I got to the room, I must admit that I was presently surprised that the room was tidy and, more importantly, not smelly like the lobby and hallways. The mattress was too soft and bouncy, but otherwise, the room was decent. The room did not have a thermostat or central heating or air, and it was chilly in the room. When I went to wash my hands, the water was rust colored.
I was able to stay with a friend, so I avoided staying at Hotel Amari for as much as I could. I had booked a room for 4 days, and I checked out on the 3rd day and caught a flight 1 day early. When I was checking out, I asked for a refund for the one day I would not use. The desk clerk told me that since Booking.com made the reservation that I would have to get a refund from Booking.com. When I called Booking.com they told me that Hotel Amari would have to issue the refund. So they just point the finger at each other, and I haven't received a refund.
Both Hotel Amari and Booking.com get my lowest possible grades. I will NEVER use either one again, and I caution all that may consider using Booking.com or staying at Hotel Amari.

Disappointing Experience
My stay was very unpleasant. The front desk staff, particularly the person working the night shift, was extremely rude and unprofessional. The room had a bad smell, and overall, the cleanliness of the place was poor. To make things worse, the heater wasn’t functioning properly, making the stay uncomfortable. I wouldn’t recommend this place.
