Charming Atmosphere, Disappointing Service and Food Flavor.

We recently dined at Hiouchi Cafe, drawn in by its glowing local reputation and its charming, woodsy atmosphere. The space itself is undeniably inviting—rustic, warm, and reminiscent of a cozy home-cooking vibe. Unfortunately, the experience did not live up to the ambiance.

From the moment we arrived, it was clear there was a discrepancy in how guests were treated. A table of locals seated just before us received prompt and attentive service, with their water, drinks, and orders taken almost immediately. In contrast, our drink order and even silverware were completely forgotten. We waited quite some time before another waitress had to retake our entire order. Even after that, our drinks were forgotten again. By the time his drink arrived (at my husband’s persistence), I’d already lost interest in ordering my own.

When the food finally came out, it was bland and underwhelming. Perhaps my palate is accustomed to the more flavorful cuisine of Southern California, but given the restaurant's high praise among locals, we were expecting something memorable. Unfortunately, the flavors were as disappointing as the service.

To summarize: the atmosphere is picturesque, and portions are generous, but the food and service left much to be desired. As new residents in the area and frequent restaurant explorers, we were excited to try this highly recommended spot. However, this experience left us disappointed, and we won’t be returning. Sadly, even the local Denny’s offers a more satisfying, flavor and service, dining experience.

We came for our anniversary breakfast. It’s an historic cafe with great food and a long history. It’s also overpriced.

Upon sitting, we were immediately offered 2 anniversary mimosas by our vivacious and seasoned server, which I gratefully accepted. We were later charged $7 each for what I thought were complimentary drinks. The breakfast combos are great, but priced between $18 and $30 per plate. There is also a $1.50 surcharge for each egg ? order, adding to our growing bill. Even with complimentary anniversary coffee, we spent over $100 for just two people. The food is amazing, and the sausage links are honestly the best anywhere, but having breakfast for the price of a theme park ticket seems excessive.

Went on a Sunday around 11am. Party of 4. I was surprised that it only took 10min to be seated with all the people around.
They have indoor and outdoor seating.
Cute place and very pleasant staff.
Food was good. Chicken fried steak was good but a little burnt.
Pancakes were perfect.

THIS PLACE IS AMAZING! I have no words to explain how great the food and staff are at this place. We had breakfast the two days we were staying next door at the Hiouchi Motel while we explored Jedediah Smith State Park. On the last day, I had a breakfast sandwich, but I ordered it with mushrooms, spinach, cheese, and egg (since I am vegetarian). My husband had the pork chops, and he said they were phenomenal. Can’t wait to come back and have our breakfast here!

A total treat. Everything is wonderful at this traditional old restaurant. Big portions and reasonable cost. Highly recommend, expect a short wait for a table

Everything was cooked great. Eggs were over easy like I ordered. Bacon was cooked perfect. Gravy was very good, not great. Great place to eat. We were glad we stopped there for breakfast. Waitress was very nice and helpful.

Homemade style chicken fried steak was very good. The gravy was creamy and had sausage in it. The sausage didn't over power the dish.
Service was very good

Grabbed breakfast here with my family. We had a great experience. This cafe has your classic small-town feel with delicious diner food. The staff was so friendly and attentive- they get you seated, fed, and on your way in a quick and easy manner, without you feeling rushed. I recommend this place if you're in the mood for some tried and true classic American grub for breakfast or lunch.
