We stayed at Black Orchid B & B for two nights, August 3rd and 4th. We had not been there before. Our room, the River Boat Suite, was very nice and large, with a tiled balcony on two sides and four sets of French doors opening onto the balcony. The bathroom has a very fancy looking tub and a separate large shower with very nice tile work. The toilet is in its own little room. The bed was comfortable and the room was very clean. I mention this because there were more decorative items and pieces of furniture in the room than you can imagine, but there was no dust. There were nice chairs to sit in out on the balcony and it is a nice place to sit and read. We could even see a bit of the ocean from our room and the balcony.||||The breakfasts were very good and the presentation was lovely. Plus, Linda gives you dessert, so no need to eat again until dinner time.||||Linda and Earl are very friendly and talkative. Some people may find them a bit too talkative, but they are charming and we enjoyed visiting with them. We would stay there again if we were in the area. They are located a few blocks from the botanical gardens.||||We called only a week before we wanted to stay, and I was a bit concerned because they do not take credit cards, only cash or checks. Linda asked me to make out our deposit check to her rather than the business, which also concerned me as to whether there was some kind of problem. She said she didn’t have a business checking account yet. They have been in business for eight years. I did wonder about that. I meant to send a deposit, but didn’t remember to get it done in time. I just e-mailed Linda to let her know I forgot and she was fine with that. (In general though, you will want to send that deposit, otherwise they won’t hold your room for you if someone else wants to book it.) When we got there, everything was fine and normal, and once you get acquainted with Linda and Earl it won’t seem so odd that they run their business differently than you might expect. You will get their lowest rate if you call and book directly rather than using an on-line booking service.

The Black Orchid has theme styled rooms. Our room was done in a New Orleans theme and it was a bit over the top. Our hosts, Linda and Earl were very friendly and outgoing. They serve a wonderful breakfast.

I’ve heard only great stuff from the locals about this hideaway. I’ve recommended it to my outdoorsy friend who does high tech remote work and loves to surf 🏄‍♀️ and free dive. Encinitas is a great place to chill and relax.
