I've been to BBL a couple of times, but this last trip was so great I wanted to write a review. I went with a 7 other families. Between us we had kids ranging from 9 months to 8 years old. It is a perfect place to go with young kids. The beach has a perfect shallow area for all levels of swimmers, and there is a tire swing and a couple of great trees for climbing. There are short hikes to explore and look for wild life and chickens to feed. Coming from San Francisco, it's great to be able to open a door in the morning and just let the kids out to play. Sitting around the campfire at night talking with friends as the kids ran around in the dark never got old. The location is beautiful, and you can eat every meal outside. It's truly a magical place.

We stayed in side-by-side cabins with my brother's family and loved the time warp back in time to the 1950's (with a modern twist). The cabins are cute and clean and have everything you need for a comfortable stay. We had 4 adults, 5 kids and our dog and had the best time floating down the rapids in the river, jumping into swimming holes, and sunning ourselves on the sandy beach. The campfire at night was a highlight sharing s'more supplies with our neighbors and a bottle or two of fine whiskey for the adults. We are going back this summer to take advantage of all the redwood hikes in the area.

A wonderful locally owned cabin retreat. The cabins are fully equipped and very cozy. The river is amazing, I could have swam in it all day long. Warm water and slow current. They have tubes to play in. So glad I went!

BBL is an amazing spot. The river alone makes it incredible, but WAIT...there's more! It's situated right on a bend of the Eel River that's one of the best places to swim EVER! It's like a natural Olympic size swimming pool surrounded by cliffs, with beautiful trees on one side, and a beach and valley on the other. Breathtaking.||There are hikes all over the property, too. So far my favorite is one that goes up a tributary of the river. It's like being in Jurassic Park without the dinosaurs. Super lush, waterfalls everywhere, with a few deep pools to dunk in. ||The lodge, and all that goes with it, are great, too. The cabins are super sweet - retro rustic, with all you'd ever need to cook a great meal. Each cabin comes with its own BBQ, too. There are picnic tables and a fire pit in the center of the cabins, so it's a perfect place to go with a big group, or a great place to meet new people. You can be as social as you want to be.||If you're into activities (besides hanging at the beach or inner tubing), there's ping pong, badminton and a big cozy indoor game room. There's also great biking in the area.||I'd recommend to everyone. It's the perfect place to get away and feel like you've REALLY gotten away.

I've agonized over how to convey how much I love Big Bend Lodge. It is truly my favorite place to be. From the cozy cabins to the beautiful scenery, it is summertime perfection. There is no cell phone service and no internet connection. There is only nature, swimming, books, games, and conversations with friends. You can tell this place is lovingly cared for. I can't wait to return.

We discovered BBL about 5 years ago and it's become my favorite summer getaway spot. Where else can you be in a spectacular wilderness setting yet have the comfort of hot running water, comfortable beds and fully equipped kitchens. What a joy to see kids (and grown-ups) running around being kids, minus electronic gadgets or cell phones, making s'mores around the campfire at night and playing all day in the river. It's all about the river, and BBL features some of the best swimming holes in Northern California. Most guests spend the bulk of their time at the main beach, but a short walk upstream brings you to another magical spot, and for the adventurous, there's a splendid deep hole downstream that requires a bit of bushwhacking but well worth the effort. Keep in mind BBL is rustic - surrender to your kids getting dirty and tracking sand everywhere, and mosquitos can be fierce at dusk - bring repellant. Pay attention to the 'What to bring' list, in order to avoid that hour round trip into Laytonville (which has a very well stocked grocery store). A great place to unplug, unwind and rejuvenate.

The place to slow down, with family, the dog if you have em, and the slow moving Eel river. It's a place I never want to leave, and enjoy immensely. The cabins are simple, clean and have everything you need to enjoy outdoor cooking, reading, swimming, napping and more swimming. Soo nice.

1950's cabins with 2016 prices. Host is rude, place is layed back, river is dirty and beach is unappealing. The host ordered my son who arrived 1/2 hour early after a 7 hour drive to leave the property till offical check in time. Understand to get there includes a 1/3 of mile drive down a steep dirt road to get to the lodge. So my son had to drive back up the driveway, only to turn around and return. Yes, this did happen. They also have everyone sign one sided waivers as soon as you arrive. Lots of wildlife, spiders, snakes, some type of parisite in the water at the swimming hole, and our dog found a skunk (her fault). Did i mention the $15 per night fee for the dog, even though they don't clean the cabins during the stay? Anyway, there are some better choices out there...
