Marti and Merle are great host, and very friendly. Meals were nice and homey. Slept great in the cabins. Van tours to see the animals were wonderful. Only negatives is there is no lighting over the sink and needed longer cord for my hair dryer to us the mirror.

We were a group of 5 and didn't stay overnight at the lodge but flew in from Girdwood for the afternoon. After some weather delays, we finally got to Lake Clarke area around 2PM and Merryl and team were ready to welcome us as soon as we landed. We were only able to go to 2 of the viewing points/meadow areas because the tide was so high (due to it being late in the afternoon), but we saw 6 bears. The first one about 30yds away (a solo male) that hung around the meadow for the entire afternoon. We then spotted a mama and cub swimming down the river, Merryl led us to the next meadow over where they were walking out and towards the beach. The mama and cub walked RIGHT PAST US nearly 10ft away. Best part was that the cub stopped, looked at us, backed up onto his hind legs, and scratched his back against the tree. It looked like he was putting on a private dance show just for us :_) safe to say we were in awe! After the tour, I definitely hold an admiration of these special creatures, and hope to come back to the Kenai peninsula or Kodiak for more bear viewings.

We were on an unrelated bear viewing excursion yesterday and our plane crashed upon take off from the beach! No one got hurt but our plane was wrecked. The tide was coming in, bears were around and it was pouring rain. We were screwed to say the least.
Not ten minutes later a 4x4 bus from Bear Mountain Lodge came to our rescue. They had been listening to the radio and came to get us. Even though they were closed for the season and trying to clean and pack up, they were gracious enough to let the 12 of us take shelter and entertain us for hours while we waited for another flight, which kept getting delayed due to weather.
They were filled with great stories and were so great to us. I will forever appreciate the hospitality. I'd say I will be back, but hail no! Not flying again. LOL
Thanks all!

I'm a professional photographer and after many years of taking part in bear viewing tours in Lake Clark National Park, this is by far the worst experience that I've ever gone through.||||Our trip started with a phenomenal flight with Mark Stadsklev from Fly Rusts over the Cook Inlet. Once we arrived at the lodge, we were required to leave our food and to get on a bus so they could drive us to see the bears.||||After getting off the bus, things started to look very different from other bear viewing tours that I've attended in the past in this area. Our guide, Tony, didn't provide any welcome speech, orientation, or even safety briefing; he just pointed out at a viewpoint and told us to go there and take a look to see if there were any bears while he remained chatting with the driver from the other bus.||||It was low tide, and I booked the tour during that time on purpose since it's the best time to see the bears clamming on the beach. Honestly, I wasn't surprised to see that there were no bears on the beach; all of them were clamming, and we could see them with our binoculars and telephoto lenses from about a mile away. When I asked Tony if we could walk on the beach to see the bears, he told me that we didn't have the right equipment to walk there. In the meantime, there were 5+ groups from other companies walking to see the bears from up close with the waders provided by their guides. At this point, I knew that this was going to be a very different experience.||||After waiting for 30 minutes, Tony took us to 2 other viewpoints on the beach where there were no bears. Again, all of them were clamming on the beach. He took us back to the lodge finishing the tour 25 minutes before the scheduled time (It doesn't seem too much, but it is on a 2-hour tour "in the field" with the bears.||||The worst of all this experience wasn't not seeing the bears. Of course, wildlife is unpredictable, and it probably was the lodge owner's fault not to provide the right equipment and instruction to walk where the bears are. The worst was having a guide, Tony, who didn't care at all about the participants. The tour was advertised as a bear viewing tour with a naturalist, and he didn't provide any comments or talk about bears, like their behavior, life on the bay, mating, or eating...all the guides I've been with before have provided this information. A lady in our group even asked him to talk about the sense of smell of the bears, and his only response was, "they smell blood from 5 miles".||||Disappointment and frustration fall short of describing this experience; not only because of the considerable investment that takes a tour like this but because of your expectations when you see everybody looking at the bears from 100 yards while you have to see them from 2 miles because of a complete incompetent guide and company.||||PS - Thanks to Mark for saving our day with such a spectacular flight in and out of Chinitna Bay!

If you want an unforgettable experience visit Bear Mountain Lodge. Merrill and Marty were exceptional hosts providing comfortable accommodations and delicious home cooked meals. Merrill made sure we had every possible opportunity to view bears in their natural habitat. And boy did we see bears, coastal brown bears and black bears galore!!! Highly recommend a 2 day stay if possible! Kathy and Mike

I have done several tours in the Chinitna bay and in other parts of Alaska and this is by far the worse bear tour I have been so far (and one of the most expensive ones). Today there were 8 groups from other companies just next to the bears clamming in the beach (where I have always been with previous tours). However our guide, Tony, didn't want to take us to the beach, so we had to watch a bear miles far. We were a group of photographers, an even with 600mm lenses we just saw the shape of a bear in the distance. Wildlife is unpredictable, there are tours where you cant see anything, and it's fine. It's nature. The problem here is that other companies and tour guides do care about their customer getting close enough to see the bears and this one not. We even finished 45 min earlier that what the program says... I want my money back!

We flew to Bear Mountain Lodge with Rust's Flying Service from Anchorage. Amazing 90 minute flight by Dan - see the Rust's site for another review. We were met by Mike, our guide, in torrential rain. Lodge staff checked our coats to make sure we were weather proof and then it was off to the bus for a really short trip down the beach. Then a quick walk - back to the bus, and miraculously the weather cleared up. We walked up a path to the viewing areas and quickly saw a couple of bears in the distance. As we chatted another bear came into view behind us and we stood for ages watching it walking closer to us along the river bank. Mike was full of hilarious stories and made absolutely sure that everyone had photographs on phones/cameras to capture the day. As we left on the plane, we saw bears scampering along the beach too - amazing day.

This was possibly the highlight of our trip to Alaska. The flight in through the mountains and landing on the beach started an experience beyond our expectations. Marty and Merrill our hosts along with Tony who took us on some of the bus rides, and walks, to view bears where simply wonderful. While the bears were in short supply we certainly saw enough of them, and close up, to be quite breathtaking.||We had an overnight stay in a comfortable cabin and the catering, by Marty, was top class. We were sorry to be leaving.||The flight out was even more thrilling than the flight in with a little sightseeing detour.Definitely recommend this and we found it to be worth the cost.
