Went to see the opening night performance of A Soldier's Play.

From the reception of the audience to the performance, I could not have been more impressed. The theatre had an easy flow from entry, to purchase of beverage and snack to timing for seating. My mother in law uses a walker and the staff was attentive about assisting her seating, stowing the walker and having it miraculously re-appear during intermission without inquiry!

The production of the show was notable. Comfortable seating, easy to see and hear the wonderful performers. It's a sweet intimate theater. Support their work!

I had forgotten how much I missed live theater until my recent visit to Altarena. "It's Only a Play" has closed already but if the rest of the season maintains the same quality of acting and directing, I'll definitely be back. Complimentary cookies and coffee was a nice touch, especially for a matinee. The new seats are comfortable but I wish they had left more keg room between the isles.

I saw and loved the incredible cast of 'It's Only a Play' at Altarena and since learning more about this theatre, and the experiences of my peers through the years and today, I support Altarena to become a place with integrity someday, and I am following their growth closely. This is an organization that still harms actors and directors, but I'm an optimist and I believe the voices in our community with courage and privilege can come together to rally for a healthy change to stop harm, retroactively address it, and begin a new season of true care and humanity here. I will be delighted and happy to edit this review if I see meaningful and non performative improvement here.

An enjoyable venue; good singing by the performers, cute skits and laughter filled the arena! Towards the end, we all joined in singing popular Christmas Carole's; Jingle Bells etc. Only downside is if you are large bodied or tall, that seats are small and not much leg room if you have a 33" or longer inseam . Some chairs in the first row, but haven't investigated how you reserve those. I'm sure you can though.

This is the oldest (1928), continuously running neighborhood theater in California. Plays are done in the round. They put on very professional performances at a very reasonable price.

I appreciate the intimacy in this community theater. Just saw Bill Giamona in the production, Company. Definitely would recommend it. They have done some spectacular performances over the years. I also like that you may enjoy a glass of wine during the performance, not just during intermission. Of course, they always have great cookies too. 🙂 🙂
