This place is a hidden gem, when I tell you that you will not be disappointed. One of the best BBQ places in San Diego county. I say county because it's in Alpine. Yes I said Alpine, and well worth the drive. Jay the owner was helping us with our order let's hope he finds someone who can help when he needs it and they continue his wonderful service. I will definitely be coming back.

The best brisket I have ever tasted. Not over powering with seasonings or dry rub. But season to perfection and letting the main star be the star. Don't believe it. Taste it for yourself! Highly recommend ? 10-10

Updated review:
My husband and I stopped at Jay's for a lunch date one afternoon. This is a small, family-owned business run by a delightful husband and father. The food and service were exceptional, so I should have taken the time to write a proper, eloquent review reflecting how much we enjoyed supporting this establishment.

Highly recommend!!!

Great family-owned restaurant for some legit, hardwood smoked BBQ! Friendly staff, clean & welcoming. Definitely recommend if you like BBQ! Service is a bit slow, but good food takes time. Some gluten free options too, which we appreciated.

Great barbecue in Alpine. Get there early because when they run out, they close. The barbecue ribs, pork, and the brisket are top-notch. The sauce is KC style with a southern kick. The sides are stellar. Jay is doing front and back of the house assisted by the family. You won't be disappointed at Jay's Southern Cafe.

Well Alpine you certainly have kept this place a secret. All I hear about is Grand Ole BBQ and I personally think it is very over priced for mediocre food at best and is the most overrated BBQ place they are 0 from 3 visits for me, not a fan at all.
My family and I moved back to alpine and decided to give Jays a try and we were in no way disappointed in fact blown away.
Firstly over the phone I got Jay he was fantastic and helped with the menu, we ordered some ribs, grits, yams, kids cheeseburger and a brisket sandwich with potato salad.
RIBS- were fantastic great smoke flavor tender and juicy.
POTATO SALAD- I have never really ever tasted a potato salad quiet like this it was deliciously creamy and tangy back bite.
YAMS- these are from another planet it was like a Christmas flavor explosion in my mouth those who love the old pumpkin spice will smash a plate of theses yams.
GRITS- these awoke my ancestors creamy and so delicious.
BRISKET SANDWICH-oh my days this was just what you want it is served dry but the BBQ sauce added and you can thank me later for this flavor journey.
KIDS BURGER- great value for kids meal $7-99 good juicy grilled burger kid was smiling.
Truly we spent $51 that night and we polished off everything, the food was superb and deserves to get recognition and some support as this is a family owned business, the son gave me my order and his smile and enthusiasm were enough to return for. I spoke with the owner again when I was there he remembered my name from the call and we had a nice chat really nice guy.

So far best barbecue I have had in San Diego County. Had a brisket sandwich. The meat was super tender and juicy. The BBQ sauce is also very good .I got the sweet sauce but I also tasted the spicy. They both have good flavor. The picture attached is a banana pudding cake . I love banana pudding and this cake didn't disappoint at all. VERY DAMN GOOOD . Definitely would recommend this place if you are in San Diego .
