What a fabulous find in downtown San Jose. It was very easy to get to from Sacramento. The hotel is a gorgeous historic hotel yet it has been completely refurbished. It’s beautiful. The king room is very large with a great bathroom. Bathroom lighting is ok but not great for putting on makeup. I bring my own lighted makeup mirror but it would be a nice addition if they added a 5xwall mirror. Bed and pillows are very comfortable. Hotel is located within walking distance of many great restaurants as well as the San Jose Center for performing arts. My tip for parking is to PARK FIRST in the corner lot ($42 overnight) directly behind registration @S First St & W San Carlos St because if you choose to park near the lobby entrance that area has only 15 min spots and then to get back to parking lot it’s a one way street to loop around to get back. Gentleman who checked me in was extremely nice and bonus is the room rate is very reasonable for being right down near everything.

Staff was great, very helpful and friendly. Five stars if it's just rating the staff. Very clean room and bathrooms, but I had a terrible allergic reaction to whatever they used on the sheets. If you have sensitive skin bring your own sheet or pillowcase. That's never happened to me at other hotels. The smell was so strong and I woke up with red blotches all over my skin. The bar was great in the evening. Location was walking distance to the convention center and a lot of great restaurants.

We booked the room for $136 for the night and told parking was $42. Ten minutes after checking in I happened to check our bank account (paid with a debit card) and found a hold of $286.34. When we inquired they said there was an incidentals hold added to the room charge that we had not previously been told about. We checked out yesterday. Today, I still have the hold of $286.34 plus a separate charge of $136.34. Effectively, they have tied up more than three times the cost of the room I reserved on their website ($422.68). I understand, and was ok with, the hold of $286.34 and figured they would deduct the room and parking charge from that and just return the $45 extra they held once we checked out with no damage to the room. Just know if you rent a room there to expect that.
Our room was mostly clean, but did have trash left behind the bed from someone previous. It is definitely an older hotel but semi updated and the elevator smelled heavily of marijuana and cigarettes. The restaurant was completely empty most of the time we were there. They advertise live music so we went down to check it out. It was a large group of people gathered around a small stage more like a private event. My husband and I found a menu and looked over the options for a few minutes waiting by the check in desk for someone to come take us to a table. No one came to greet us or even looked in our direction so we left and went to another restaurant.
I called to discuss the hold on my card with the lady who was extremely rude and kept interrupting me. I inquired about a price breakdown for the room. We were not provided with a receipt, and although we waited for a few minutes, no one was at the front desk when we left. She told me on the phone today that parking was not $42 as the sign posted out side, the website and the guy who checked us in all told us, but said it’s actually $45.95 including taxes and fees. I’m not real worried about the additional $3-$4, but just another thing they don’t tell you up front.
For the price we have stayed in much more modern hotels with many more amenities on the same block that did not include such high holds on a debit card. In fact, a hotel across the street asked if I’d like to put the hold on a CC instead of my debit so it didn’t put a large hold my available finances. That is customer care/service. I would recommend trying a different hotel if you have a choice.

this is a truly fantastic hotel! the interior design is amazing, the desk staff are friendly but (as per other reviews) the manager less friendly. we were faced with a hefty and unexpected parking charge. the manager took the money from our card, reassuring us that he would watch the CCTV from our checking and if parking charge ambiguity existed he would then refund the money. then email us either way. the charge stands, no email received. you cannot email the property and the phone goes to a fax machine. this is kind of crazy! but otherwise its a wonderful hotel.

Older hotel rooms have been updated but my room is a bit dark. There is a light rail transit out front of the hotel that beeps to alert pedestrians not stop it seems. I asked if I'd be able to hear it in my room and was assured no, but it is quite loud. For a business traveler there is no grab and go coffee bar and breakfast on the go options to buy sit down purchase only. The restaurant is dated and needs a refresh and is quite empty. A bit of a disappointment, will try AC hotel next time as it's further from the transit (Hilton and Hyatt) have the same noise issue but their windows are a bit thicker and less noise.

Anyone giving this hotel four or five stars is IMO being dishonest. Take a look at the recent reviews in the 3 and under ratings. IMO these are true reviews. First, the hotel is located in an area that is either phasing out or phasing in, there are empty stores fronts throughout the area and it feels desolate. Second, the lobby and other areas are tired and warn. The hotel is empty. Very few guests. Third, the hotel is relatively expensive comparatively as there are numerous hotels in the area of equal or better quality for a much less price. Fourth, they front load the nightly charge. For example, they charged $310/night, but on the bill, the first night was $485 and the second was $200, so if you had to cancel you forfeit the first night charge. The room, bed and bathroom was adequate (3 star). The area is very noisy and the noise started at 5:00 am every morning. Thankfully I brought noise reduction headphones otherwise I would have had a very difficult time sleeping. I would not stay here again.

The place is beautiful but it has some drawbacks. The place is close in downtown and is conveniently located. Neatly decorated, immaculately clean. The rooms are decent sized but the beds are big and comfy.
The bed is something that will give you a good night sleep but the team next door will keep you up. Bring some white noise to get some decent sleep.
Another drawback is the parking. It is pretty steep for overnight parking.
But I did enjoy the stay.

Not so bad overall. With a couple of downsides:
- 40$ per night for a parking for customers. I mean, for me it was more than a 25% of a price of a room
- Most of the rooms are too noisy at night due to a busy street nearby or service workers and trucks starting as early as 4 a.m.
- The invoice was written to a wrong billing address (completely nonsensical). Receiving another copy of invoice after check-out with corrected billing address was not possible after check-out. Really? Someone is lazy or incompetent in this organization
