This place was quite a bit more run down than I had expected. The owner did say he did not rent our room that often, since most avoided it since it was not a log cabin. We were ok that it was a cottage above a former carriage garage, but there were so many little things that could have been done to make the place better... Lose deck boards leading up the the room could have been tightened down. A bush overgrowing the stairs leading to the room could have been trimmed back. The curtains with torn backing could have been replaced. The 4 cup coffee maker that took almost an hour to brew should have been replaced. The little things.....

Great experience staying for a long weekend! Rustic, peaceful, clean, and a great location. We stayed in the Grant Cabin for our anniversary getaway and really enjoyed the quick drive to Galena Main Street while having a quiet place to relax at in the evenings. The screened in porch was so nice to sit and watch the sunset. The jacuzzi tub was great after a long day of walking. Its not a fancy place but we really enjoyed the rustic charm.

Our experience with this business was terrible. The entire place is run down and not at all worth the ridiculous amount of money we were charged. There was no signage anywhere letting us know we were in the correct location pulling into someone's driveway. The owner seemed less than interested in helping us check in. There are not even keys to the cabins. He did not know which cabin we were supposed to be in. We booked a cabin that was to accommodate 6. We got a one room cabin with 1 queen bed and a hide-a-bed loveseat. When we questioned this he accused us of lying to him. He was incredibly rude. This establishment promotes a continental breakfast. There was no food. The "kitchen" was a dirty mini fridge and a dirty microwave.|Additionally, the plumbing does not meet Illinois code.|Definitely would NOT recommend. We stayed one night and cancelled the rest of our reservation.

This trip was perfect for our anniversary weekend. This was exactly what we wanted and more than we had expected. We stayed in the Rawlins cabin, and it was rustic with a bit of modern flair. We had a mini fridge and microwave and a couple of wine glasses and cork screw to go with. Yes, the bathroom was smaller and we had to go upstairs to use it, but that was just fine to get the ambience we wanted. The fireplace worked well, and the HVAC kept us warm and toasty at night. The owner brought us wood right away when we needed it. Location is outstanding, less than a ten minute drive to downtown Galena. ||Overall highly recommend for a cozy, rustic getaway that’s still close to the downtown area for a weekend away.

My husband and I have been coming here for about 20 years. We started coming when the owner, Karen, ran the cabins. It was a magical place. Then her daughter, Tammy, took it over and we formed a great relationship with her. We would come up several times a year and had recommended the cabins to many friends and family. It was just wonderful. For Christmas this year, we gave our two kids and their spouses a weekend there, each with their own cabin. As the brochure states and as a customer who frequented the place regularly, this is a pet friendly establishment, so my daughter and her husband brought their two dogs as we had many times. The guy running the place, who is the owner's grandson, called me upon my kids arrival and told me that I purposely went against his no pet policy as he had stated in our conversation back in October. I said there was NO such conversation and that if he had said there was a no pet policy I would have not booked them a cabin as they were bringing their dogs. He said it had changed and was extremely rude in our conversation. I told him to charge me the pet fee (why would you have a pet fee if this were not a pet friendly establishment). He agreed and as I hung up, I called him a not so nice name which he apparently heard. He called back and my husband took the call because I was upset. He told my husband that he was kicking our kids out and that he would be charging us for one night. My husband went back and forth with him, told him our history with his mom and asked if we could work something out as we had given our kids the weekend stay. He wanted an apology from me for calling him a nasty name and agreed they could stay. Both my husband and I were so uncomfortable while they were there, wondering if he would bother them or god knows what. This is the MOST unprofessional encounter I have EVER had with a person running a business. We will NEVER return to the cabins as this man is not capable of conducting himself as a professional. I am sad that this happened and find it a real shame because we loved staying there. He should also be sorry because over the last 20 years we gave this establishment a lot of business and money and would have continued to do so. I would highly recommend going to another establishment in Galena and save yourself from an unpleasant and unprofessional encounter. I will be calling the Galena Chamber of Commerce letting them know of our experience.

Nothing less than FANTASTIC! We had a great time. Great host, clean cabins, perfect for that get away. WE will be back again. Loved out time.
Update: 11-16-23: back again. Still live the place but our favorite cabin, Parker is no longer available. Sad, we swear it was haunted. 1st stay our furniture actually move to a different position. Not once but twice. Hopefully the cabins can be all up and running again.

My girlfriend and I have now stayed at the log cabins 3 times. And we love it! It's quaint, it's rustic, it's romantic, it's clean and it's an overall great place. Our most recent visit was last week and I called last minute to see of there was an availability. Tammy assured us she'd have a cabin ready for us upon arrival later that day. After an afternoon of hiking around Galena, the whirlpool in the cabin was a welcome respite to our weary bones. We also enjoyed a fire outside as the owner was nice enough to have some firewood out for us. The weather was perfect and the full moon and the stars in the sky only made the evening all the better. As we checked out mid-day on Sunday, Tammy recommendation to visit Chestnut Mountain was awesome! ||||The Augustus Chetlain Log Cabins in one of our favorite places to visit and we look forward to many more visits in the future. We stayed two nights. Enjoyed the fireplace one night and the large whirlpool tub with a view the second. Breakfast was fresh muffins and juice with coffee and maker in the cabin. The cabin was remarkably clean and everything worked. It is close to town - five minutes from being parked on Main St. - but looks out over rolling pasture. We were delighted with our choice.
