$175 for a ONE HOUR MASSAGE? ARE YOU KIDDING?

I recently called to schedule a prenatal massage for my wife. When I spoke with Kari, I
asked if she provided this type of service. After a brief pause, she hesitantly responded
with, "Umm, yeah". This gave me pause, as my wife had mentioned that not all
massage therapists are certified for prenatal care.
Kari explained that while her expertise lies in treating autoimmune disorders and pain
management, she could still accommodate my wife. She mentioned that her sessions
usually last between 1.5 to 2 hours, which seemed ideal. After discussing the details
with my wife, we confirmed a booking for Friday, October 11th, 2024, at 3:30 PM.
My wife arrived for her appointment but had some difficulty finding parking, which made
her a few minutes late. Everything seemed to go smoothly until I received a receipt at
4:45 PM, indicating that the massage had lasted no more than an hour. This surprised
me, as I was initially told the session would last 1.5 to 2 hours.
When my wife returned, she shared her experience. Unfortunately, Kari didn’t have the
proper equipment for a prenatal massage, forcing my wife to lie on her side for the
entire session, which wasn’t ideal. What was more shocking, however, was the charge:
$216 for a one-hour massage! This was much higher than expected, especially since
we were told the session would be longer.
To add to the confusion, my wife had asked if tipping was expected. Kari replied that it
wasn’t, yet a 20% tip had already been added to the payment. I take responsibility for
missing this during checkout, but the fact that it was automatically included without clear
communication didn’t sit well with us.
After the massage, I texted Kari about the shortened session. She responded at 5:24
PM, stating she was with another client. I then expressed my frustration and requested
a 25% refund + tip, given the discrepancy between the promised session length and
what was delivered. Kari refused. She later sent a screenshot from her website, stating
that massages "usually last between one and two hours, depending on need" I
countered with a screenshot from the same site, which indicated that a "full service is 2
hours" The conflicting information felt misleading, as if it were a strategy to overcharge
clients.
Ultimately, it became clear that the session was cut short because Kari had another
client scheduled shortly after my wife's appointment. She had initially quoted one
timeframe but had conflicting information on her website. This lack of transparency felt
dishonest and like a way to maximize profits at the expense of customer expectations.
Kari did offer to refund the tip, but by that point, I was too frustrated to accept. The
entire experience was disappointing, and I will not be returning. Should anyone ask for a
recommendation, I will be sure to share my negative experience and advise them to
look elsewhere.

Kari has such a great energy, but also such an abundance of knowledge. It was refreshing and not overwhelming. Her space was cozy and her massage was top notch in my book. Worth the drive!
