The owner forgot to tell the host that there were ten of us coming. We had to clean the bathrooms, kitchen, wash dishes, etc. There were dead flies and lady bugs on the carpets and on at least one bed. We understood that we had the whole house and didn’t know the host was living there.

If you're looking for an experience rather than just a night's stay, this is the place! The Manor is beautifully preserved, and the host Frederick is a very friendly, courteous, and knowledgeable individual. Do not expect modern amenities. This place is a trip back in time. They do take cards, though. All in all, this was the perfect stay for me as I wanted to get a unique feel on my trip to explore the forgotten Southern Illinois.

Wall manor is a beautiful Victorian mansion combining the authenticity of a historical home with modern creature comforts creating a fantastic experience. The host, Mr. Frederic, is a brilliant and welcoming individual. He's also a grade A chef as well. The beds are very comfortable with down pillows and thick comforters. The bathroom upstairs features a large tub and a spacious shower.
I would highly recommend this for couples looking for a romantic step back in time.

My wife and I are driving the Great River Road down the Mississippi. We were looking for a B&B in the Cairo area and came across this listing in Trip Advisor. I'm so happy we found it! Frederick, our host, who greeted us with a glass of wine, is working diligently at restoring this historic home. The interior is beautiful and filled with antique furnishings and musical instruments. Frederick, who is single-handedly trying to save a dying town, has purchased several other buildings in town, including two abandoned churches. One of the churches is now a workshop where he lovingly restores the exterior woodwork of Wall Manor. With a background in architecture and building restoration, Frederick is very knowledgeable about the history of Mound City and Cairo (and St. Louis, where he lived for many years). He even gave us a guided tour of Cairo.||||Our room on the second floor was very comfortable, equipped with a half bath. A full bath was just down the hall and was for our exclusive use. Breakfast was good French bread, delicious eggs scrambled with onions and a choice of bacon or sausage.||||Frederick is full of stories about the house and the area and was most interesting. If you enjoy history and a unique experience, stay at Wall Manor. You won't be disappointed.

Wall Manor is a grand home from a different era. The room and bed were comfortable and affordable. Our hosts, Frederick and Doc are accommodating without being intrusive. Upon arrival, Frederick offered wine and nibbles before making suggestions about where to go for dinner. He was right on the money and we had a wonderful time at dinner before returning to Wall Manor to end our evening sitting on the beautiful porch. When we returned Frederick offered another glass of wine. We did not accept the wine as we had purchased some very good beer at dinner that we wanted to taste. Upon hearing that, Frederick offered glasses for us to enjoy our beer in. ||The next morning we along with the other guests at the house enjoyed a home cooked breakfast served in the dining room. We had wonderful conversation with the other guests. Both Frederick and Doc were very knowledgeable about the house and the area and were happy to share their knowledge without being pushy.

What a find! A friend and I had business in this remote part of southern Illinois, so I looked for a bed and breakfast. For not much more than the price at a run-of-the-mill motel, we stayed in Victorian luxury. Every single item has a story. The proprietor, Mr Medler, shared his vast knowledge on a variety of subjects (architecture, history, geography, economy, and feral cats, to name a few) and even gave us a tour of nearby Cairo (pronounced "Karo" by locals) where the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers meet. Probably not a good place for a family with young children, but a delightful get- away for history buffs and romantics.
